Possession

I laid there with you
under a blanket of satellites
and a shimmering rainbow
of electromagnetic spikes and arcs
we lit a bonfire nearby
fueled with pallets and ballads
dying embers dancing with the ashes
of painful memories
you wrapped me in your favorite sweater
as we pulled on bourbon and cigarettes
and laughed naming streets and cities
after the orange glow of the lights below
we listened to the steady solid beat of music
each other’s blissful breathing and
every miles-long rush of blood
I knew that night that I had found you
I wondered briefly during which lifetime
you had gotten lost and I vowed
to hang on to every smile
every moment with you forever
I live with you now
sharing every success every failure
you’re there each time I close my eyes
I reach out for you
only to realize you’re not there
yet you’re still mine
my only regret.
